Be sure to check pod compatability

I had an interesting and unfortunate experience as I was switching out a pod yesterday: I got to the point where it is supposed to connect with my Dexcom sensor - and got a warning saying it was incompatible! WHAT?! I had a new rx on file for G6**&**G7 pods and that’s what I thought I was getting. So again - WHAT?!! Pharmacy issues occasionally are referred to insurance and my pharmacy was closed yesterday anyway so I decided do something productive and called my insurance - and they were open! They asked me to check the NRC number imprinted on the pod box, and said that it applies to both G6-only and G6/7 pods. They noted my call and referred me to my pharmacy.
I went today and the pharmacist confirmed that this number - a “stock number” applies to both types of pods, and when the pods come in from the supplier they don’t note the compatability - when a patient orders them they pull whatever boxes they have and it is up to the patient to make sure they get the correct item. This was not covered in training and it was a case of not knowing what you don’t know. So if you’re using pods with Dexcom G7 save yourself some headaches and check the box to be sure it is marked for G6 and G7.

Dorie @wadawabbit, when you say “not covered in training”, to what training are you referring?

As you know, I haven’t used Pods so I’m not an expert. Tandem covered the “compatibility” aspect very heavily both in the User Manual and in the required on-line training.

Sorry - when I switched to the G7 there was a link to online video to demonstrate how to insert, etc. Of course since this was Dexcom you wouldn’t expect them to cover Omnipod but some sort of alert would have been nice.

It always is worth the few minutes of our time to look at the manual and the printed material packed with our devices.

Oof, what should be a simple change has so many potential pitfalls. Thanks for posting. Looking at Insulet’s information it looks like there are three versions of Omnipod 5 on the market:
G6 compatible only
G6 and G7 compatible
G6 and Libre 2 plus compatible
There was a G7 only version for a short time. Some share a NDC number, the OM5 for Libre has a different NDC. Insulet being consistently inconsistent makes your first hand info valuable.

I’ve found knowing about NDC numbers useful when helping others on the forum. Here’s a good introduction: National drug code - Wikipedia Then search the NDC for your rapid acting insulin. 20+ years on the market and lots of different packages make lots of different NDC numbers for the same drug.

Completely unrelated, how was your trip on the train? I’m a bit of a train fan.

Thank you! was quite a learning! Fortunately only one box was involved but from now on I’m going to check them while I’m at the pharmacy counter!
The :railway_car: ride was nice. I’ve never wanted to travel for the holidays because of traffic on the highway and the crowds at the airport, but Union Station was not as crowded as I imagined it would be. The the ride itself was pleasant both ways - business class is quite relaxing.
