Military boarding school

We are discussing boarding school as a possibility for our 13 year old son. He was diagnosed at 6 and is well controlled on his Omnipod & G6 (last A1C was 6.1). Are there boarding schools that accept T1D children?

Hi @nolechick321 and welcome to the forum. Are you planning to send your son to a military secondary school in the hope that he will go on to attend an Academy such as West Point or the Naval Academy? If that’s the case please note that after finishing at one of these…
Finally, and most importantly, once you graduate, you automatically enter the US armed forces for a tour of duty. You are obligated to serve for five years, after which you can either stay with the military or pursue a career elsewhere. (https://www.ivyscholars.com/a-guide-to-the-us-military-academies/#)

As for entering into service it appears Type1 would exclude him from enlisting to serve.

If your goal is for him to get the education and discipline of a secondary school military education without continuing on with that, I found a link to a boarding school association - they should be able to answer questions about medical requirements, etc.

Hopefully you will hear from some forum members who are our have been in the military, for the official word.

@nolechick321 Welcome Janel to the Breakthrough T1D Community!

Certainly, there are military schools that will accept people with diabetes. In what area/Country are you looking?

Your first step is to find a scholl where he is acddemically qualifued, you have investigated the school for quality and reputation, and then applu. During your investigation, it should become apparent if he would be admitted. Keep in mind, that your son would need to take care of himself and not need to rely on other persons.
