Omnipod5

Hi all, haven’t posted in a while, but have an endo, educator appt coming up and would like this community feedback on some tech.

I’m 2 years into T1 (adult diagnosis) and switched from MDI to omnipod5 with fiasp abt 6 months ago. I also have the eversense 365 cgm which doesn’t closeloop with O5, so on manual mode. Control is great - i love the microdosing, and not having an algorithm lets me control much better during exercise.

but lately, by day 3, the pod stops working - sometimes i get an alert to “change pod now” at about 60-65 hours or it says nothing and i just ride a little higher (130-160 or spike to 250) and come down slower.. this happens when there is 25+ units in the pod left. Previously i was able to go the full 80 hours and sometimes as low as 10 units left on pod.. it takes hours for me to realize something is wrong - i dont spike until i eat- because of activity or because i just happen to not snack some days.

  1. Any ideas what is going on and what i can try/ask for?
  2. omnipod has replaced pods, but running low on my insulin reserves - would a tandem mobi be better so i can just change site without worrying abt wasting insulin?

An interesting conundrum.. We have some engineers here who might give you some insight but all I can suggest is that you ask your doctor to write your scrip so you wear your pod for two days rather than three; or have them change your insulin calculation to allow more with your order. The first would be preferable at least for me - all that insulin going to waste would bother me.

People do withdraw extra insulin from a pod although it is not recommended.

@pady87, I don’t have the Insulet agreement handy, the information included with the pods, but I believe the OmniPods are warranted to last up to 72 hours as long as there is “sufficient” insulin loaded in by user. So, my suggestion is that you ask for replacements for the defective units.

Now for my curiosity, have you been able to draw out the lost insulin just to prove to yourself that your calculations are correct. I know with my Tandem that more than 10 units of insulin remain in the cartridge after the pump locks saying it is empty.

  1. Insulet has replaced the pods every time it died early(and I remembered to file the request)..

  2. Interesting you ask that, the first few times it didn’t work on day 1, I drew out the insulin off the old one and added it back to the vial l that was still1/4 full - the next time I used that insulin, it didn’t seem to work at all- my best guess was that it lost its potency when I mixed it with the old one.

All this experiment has left me with barely scraping by on insulin. I do have several pens, but I haven’t been able to fill a vial or the pod directly with the pen needle.
