Hey all! My blood sugar is over 180 and has been for hours and I’d like to bring it down. I had a minor foot surgery (non diabetes related) this morning so it’s causing me to stay elevated.
Before my doctors told me not to stack insulin/rage bolus- so don’t take correction doses within 3 hours of each other. However I took 2 units 1-2 hours ago and my blood sugar hasn’t budged.
I want to give another unit before 3 hours. What do yall think? (I know you can’t give medical advice just curious about personal) Is this stacking? Or different because Im not correcting a food high?
Waiting for those numbers to start coming down is like watching paint dry, but in time they should. My doctor told me not to add insulin for 4 hours unless I realize I’ve miscalculated, I personally have found that having ketones in my system does keep those numbers from moving, so I drink a bottle of water (maybe two) just in case I need it, and sure enough eventually they do.
You’ve just had surgery, your numbers are a little high, and it’s the weekend. Being stressed over them isn’t going to help your healing - a call to your endo (answering service) may be helpful.
Hello Sidney @kiwifuzz and welcome back. For me personally, I wouldn’t make any more corrections beyond 2 units of Rapid-Acting with a 180 BG. Following a “minor procedure” I would resume my usual day, dosingvinsulin appropriately for my usual 230 grams of carbs and Cary on activity that my foot will permit.
Mentioning that you took 2 units of some insulin didn’t give a complete picture - for me, 2 units of rapid-acting insulin at 2:00 PM without food would drop my BGL about 180 mg/dl.
It is stacking but I might stack under certain circumstances. I am also sensitive to activity so I might try to get any kind of exercise in, instead of taking more insulin. I prefer movement to insulin when I can. I get it foot surgery will likely prevent you from a walk, but chair yoga, stretching, arm movement may be an alternative. Good luck.
