Seasonal allergies and high BS

Hi All,

It is spring here in Upstate New York and my allergies are flaring up. I feel like every year around this time I experience high blood sugars, but I have not found anything online directly connecting the two. I have read that the stress that allergies cause may raise BS, or that the treatments you use (antihistamines) can raise BS, however, my allergies are not as bad (outwardly) as they are some years (just some itchy eyes and blowing my nose a lot), and I do not treat with anything. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks,

Jess

Hi Jess @Jsich , thankfully I’m bothered very little, only itchy eyes, by pollen and other irritants so I can’t offer much firsthand experience.

One thing I can suggest is be careful choosing which medication you may use to relieve - my experience says to avoid Antihistamines which caused my BG to skyrocket and stay elevated for a couple of days.

Not so much the allergies, but in the old days before pump basal rates were automatic. Every spring and every fall I had to adjust and in my case I needed a little more insulin in the winter and a little less in the summer but for many (including the Endo who argued with me that my observation was “wrong”) people need a little less in the winter and more in the summer. My working theory is it is temperature related. Good luck @Jsich :shamrock::peace_symbol:

My allergist prescribed the Rx version of Claritin but I have not noticed issues with glucose because of it. You might look into seeing an allergist - I took OTC meds starting in childhood and was told some years ago that I had developed cough variant asthma. The allergist said if I had gotten shots as a child it may not have happened. I am writing this from an allergist’s office right now!

Thanks All,

I am not taking any meds and, honestly, so far my symptoms are not bad enough that I feel I need to. I do think anti-histamines have raised my BS in the past. Also, definitely agree with Joe re: the cold!
