Struggling to find babysitters

Hi all, does anyone have a babysitter recommendation in northern NJ? My 2 year old was recently diagnosed after we moved to the area and we haven’t been able to find reliable babysitters. I didn’t get any responses from the Type One Together babysitter list so wanted to try here. Thank you!!

Hi @rmnw Rebecca. In addition to any direct responses you get here reach out to the Breakthrough T1D New Jersey Chapter. New Jersey Metro Area Breakthrough T1D Diabetes Chapter Support Scroll all the way down till you can’t scroll any further for the chapter email address and office phone number.

They also have a virtual meetup for parents scheduled for November 12th that would probably be a good place to ask and make some friends who are going through the same thing you are.

Hope you and your kiddo are doing okay living with diabetes.

Have you tried making connections at your endo’s office? My sister is developmentally disabled and our mom became lifelong friends with other moms of special needs kids - in our case it was from her school - but they cared for each other’s children like their own, including providing child care from time to time. You might also meet teenagers with Type1 who could sit for you.

Thank you both! I have reached out to the endo office already but will look into the Breakthrough meetup!

I’ve had the best luck asking around at local diabetes events and support groups—parents there often know sitters with T1D experience or older teens with T1D who are great with kids.

I’ve had similar struggles finding someone who gets T1D care. One thing that helped was using Airbnb babysitting during a trip — we stayed with a host who also offered babysitting and had experience with diabetes. It was surprising but turned out to be a great short-term option. It’s not common everywhere, but in some areas it can work, especially if you message hosts ahead of time about your needs.
