This is a monumental year for me–it marks the 20th year that I’ve been a type 1 diabetic. And to commemorate that, this fall, I’ll be running the TCS New York City Marathon. I’m running in support of Breakthrough T1D.
It’s been a wild experience the last two decades. I can still vividly remember being the 15 year old whose life suddenly was filled with complexity and uncertainty and staring at an uncertain future of how to manage a life long health condition.
The world of being a diabetic has changed so much. CGMs, smart insulin pumps, closed-loop systems — tools that simply didn’t exist when I was diagnosed. Now a glance at my watch mid-run to check my blood sugar reading and insulin delivery, and I can keep going.
That new level of simplicity carries over into all parts of my life: work, family, travel; everything is now so much more simplified. Less time consumed by diabetes. More time being present for those around me.
That progress happened because people funded the research. I want to keep it going–and that is why I’m running NYC in support of Breakthrough T1D.
