Hi Breakthrough T1D Forum! You may have seen that we have recently launched a podcast called Voices of T1D. It’s available for viewing on YouTube and listening on Spotify, Apple and Amazon. The first episode talks about the ways that T1D shows up in relationships and interactions–sometimes at times when it’s the LAST thing you want to have to talk about or deal with.
We will be adding new episodes monthly, and plan to address a myriad of diabetes lived experiences and hot topics. What would you like to see covered? Drop a comment here!
nice podcast! I am always up for an interview, i mean if anyone ever wants to hear from an old guy, engineer, volunteer, diagnosed at a time where you had to feel your blood sugar because meters weren’t invented yet…or you died.. ![]()
@joe we absolutely plan an episode on people who are…”reaching maturity” well with T1D! I think there are some great learnings to be shared!
So topics can range from relationships to pizza and beyond? Thats awesome.
- Have an endo and someone with T1D talk about what drives them crazy at appts. Then have them talk to each other about ways to make it work. (There has be some conflict in the third part e.g. Doc says pick your two most important things to talk about T1D needs to ask how to address more than CGM review and prescriptions during appt
- Same thing but a pharmacist and/or pharmacy tech that worked at a major retail chain in the last 10 years
- Unpack the “why me” feelings at diagnosis. Sure T1D is no ones fault but what are the feelings behind “why me” and how can Type 3’s help new T1D’s work through them. Whats different about dealing with a T1D diagnosis than other diseases or us there a lot in common? Also look at this from a parent of a T1D child perspective.
- Goals vs. limits and ways to transition to taking healthy and positive actions when goals are missed for those that struggle. Maybe cover risk management with this, or with the endo topic
- Medicare episode (its a popular topic on the forum) with a SHIP counselor
- Talk about living with T1D is different in different cultures in the US. I’m imagining someone like Mila F. and her son.
- School episode(s) 509 vs IEP and how to navigate the processes. The changes as kids go from caregiver managed to self managed. There are lots of voices to hear from, parents, kids, school administrators and nurses, docs, the ADA etc. Also cover what happens when the school reports child abuse because of diabetes management.
- Talk about how much CGMs have improved, how they aren’t perfect and how we handle those situations.
- Is there space to talk about channeling the bad of T1D into something good like volunteering for BT1D or another way to do good for other people with T1D? And a series of shorts of “whats one nice thing someone in the T1D community did for you (you being someone with T1D)”
- Handling the mystery meal, boxed lunch, “food will be provided”, pandora’s burrito or “Hey Larry, where’s the food. Dunno, shouldda been here by now” events or meetings.
These are GREAT Chris! Some of these topics are actually on the roster for the next few months. I absolutely love the “good things you have done/experienced because of T1D”. Because we’ve all got them. And Pandora’s burrito made me LOL! Thanks again! I am copying these into our potential topic list!
