Is it possible to prevent hypothyroidism?

Hello all,

I’ve was diagnosed 6 years ago next month. I just recently received a TSH value of 4.32 (usually it’s been between 1.2-1.4. I’m wondering what, if anything, any of you have experienced with the condition along with being a type 1.

Are there any alternative therapies I should implement that may ward off the condition?

I’m not stressed about it and will see what the values are in a few months when I re-test.

I may have asked this before, but can’t recall. What other autoimmune conditions do you guys have? Just curious as to how other conditions affect Type 1 diabetes?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism many years ago - probably more than 20, I’m not sure. My mother had it as well although she did not have diabetes so I thought I had inherited it from her. Through this forum I learned that it’s not uncommon for us to develop thyroid issues. If I find the references I’ll add them in. I found a very recent article (published just 3 days ago!) that might be helpful:

And here’s an article on the connection between autoimmune disorders in general - people who have one may develop others.

That’s all I’ve got as far as autoimmune.
Type1 since 1963

hi @TiJoy several years after my T1 diagnosis, the same antibodies destroyed my thyroid producing cells. The way I understand it, is it is essentially the same disease sequence that causes autoimmune type 1 diabetes.

If that is the case in your situation (and only a doctor can tell you). then I don’t think there is anything you can do to prevent it, which is very similar to not being able to prevent the onset of T1D.

My thyroid stopped working decades ago, and the treatment is synthetic thyroid (synthroid). I take a pill (one dose) at the same time every day and my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is well controlled. in 30 years I’ve only had to adjust my synthroid once. The “good” news is that compared to T1D, hypothyroid is very easy to control.

I don’t have any other notable “autoimmune” co-morbidity to tell you about. Good Luck! :four_leaf_clover:

Thank you for the experience and the references.
I’ll have it tested again in the spring to see where it stands.

Thanks for sharing, @joe So if it comes to needing treatment, I’m glad it’ll be a cake walk in comparison!

Joy @TiJoy, lab test results are not always correct; where yours changed so drastically fron your usual, I suggest that you continue to stay calm until after your next result is in. My last thyroid reading was 4.48 [retest later this month] and the doctor told me she would NOT recommend any treatment for ME until it got much higher. As a side-note, for the past 10 years our daughter hasn’t had a thyroid gland - totally removed in two surgeries because of cancer. As @Joe said, the condition can be managed with medication.

Thank you, @Dennis. Will do.
I’m encouraged by your daughter’s experience.

Thanks @albertlol3. I probably should add some selenium as I’ve read the soil is depleted. I’m on top of the Vit D3
