Tandem T:slim remote bolus

I have the option of drawing a pattern through a field of dots (to make it extra fun, I have the Hubble Ultra Deep Field as the lock screen image behind the pattern dots) or using my fingerprint.

I got the same email and I did the update.

Pam

A couple of weeks ago, I signed up for early adoption of the remote bolus feature. Yesterday, I received an email from Tandem saying I was now entitled to upgrade. I waited until today when I needed to change the cartridge.

I had to watch a video with instructions on the new feature and then pass a quiz to show I understood. I then successfully installed the upgrade.

I now have a button on my phone for the remote bolus feature, BUT it doesn’t work because I have a 3-year-old Samsung Note 10, which is not yet supported. I guess I’ll have to wait until Tandem approves more phones. The remote bolus feature would be nice to have, but it is not important enough to me to spend several hundred dollars for a new phone that is supported now.

Actually, I am more anxious to try the new Dexcom 7 sensor when it is approved even though the Dexcom 6 has worked well for me. In fact, the Dexcom 6 is such a pleasure to use after having to deal with the #$%%&& Medtronic Guardian 3 sensor for the past 4 years…

Ah. That might explain things. I’m using a Samsung phone of the same generation. I don’t have access to the upgrade yet.

Dexcom G7 does look pretty cool. But, yes. G6 is a huge step up from the Guardian 3.

“Entering a remote bolus requires face recognition.”

I’m like Robert: no face recognition (even though I’m on an iPhone: an older one, though). I wonder if I can find out if it’s really necessary on the Tandem Web site somewhere. If anyone knows, enlighten us!

Hello everyone. So, I just dug through my phone settings. I can disable the facial recognition and use my phone password to authorize the bolus. That said, I think I will stick with the facial recognition option. To me this adds to the niftiness of the tech. We are initiating remote boluses from our phones (aka tricorders)! While I think all of this is pretty stinking cool, I’m not ready to step on a teleporter pad lol.

Actually I think you meant “communicator” but it’s all good😊.

So I went through the training video for the new system this afternoon, and discovered that I WILL be able to use my password or fingerprint as well as face recognition (if I had that…) on my phone. As so often happens, asking a question inspired me to find the answer myself. Sorry!
I can’t follow through quite yet, though: I just replaced an infusion set this afternoon, so will have to wait until Saturday just before I do a new one of them, according to the instructions. Oh, well.
–K.

Thanks for that info. I’m planning to switch from Medtronic by year’s end. Although, for personal reasons, I prefer to not bolus from phone for reasons related to my profession. In a professional setting, it appears to be inappropriate for me to be engaging with my phone. I would you have to constantly explain why in settings where that would not be feasible. If I engage with an apparent medical device, the reason is obvious.

I, too, have fully updated my pump and t:connect software. (I then moved to New Zealand 3 days later, where remote bolus is not yet approved. That likely makes me the only person in New Zealand with this functionality.)

Having said this, all the hand wringing really isn’t warranted. There has not, nor has Tandem ever communicated that the phone bolus would replace the screen on the pump. I don’t really know where this idea came from, as I never drew this conclusion from my research on the matter.

What if you crack the screen on your pump? Or the screen on your phone? Or you lose your phone? It’s simply a secondary complimentary way to administer your insulin.

The biggest disappointment is that there is such a small number of Android phones available at rollout. Even Google’s flagship Pixel phones are not compatible; Tandem only allows 5 or so Samsung phones to work with this feature.

Still waiting on my invitation to update software.

That’s a pity. I have a Samsung, but, as noted above, it’s an older model which is not likely to be supported. I wonder why. The hardware shouldn’t matter. As long as the app is working, it should be able to transmit the command signal.

If you read through, you’ll see that Dorie saw a third party review which mentioned that, in the reviewer’s opinion, future pump design seemed to be heading in that direction. Which we then discussed and debated. I don’t see it as hand-wringing.

Tandem is not going to disable the existing X2 touchscreen.

Omnipod is already fully remote, and has been for years.

Tandem may introduce a pump model that’s fully remote at some point down the line, but I expect there to always be a pump available that does not depend on an extra device and wireless connection.

I used to wear Omnipod but got tired of waiting for the hybrid closed loop and switched to t:slim. In 2019 I was traveling in New Zealand and the omnipod pdm controller experienced a fatal software crash. With no way to bolus, I switched to my emergency Lantus supply and multiple daily injections. So I certainly understand the concern about only having one way to administer insulin on the pump.

I know that the future “t:sport” (or whatever they’re calling it now) is intended to be used like a reusable Omnipod. It slots into a disposable adhesive mesh pouch and uses a very short length infusion tubing. But this is an addition to Tandem’s lineup, not a replacement.

years and years and years ago I had a mini med pump and it came with a small fob. It was done by tone and you could bolus by a press of a button. It seems that tandem is making a big ado about a little upgrade, wow

I wanted to add my input on this…we received the invite for my 13 year old son’s tslim. We followed the steps for updating his pump and the Tconnect app. He has been using it and we’ve not had any problems. My son loves that he doesn’t have to pull his pump out in front of everyone to bolus. We have been checking the numbers closely to be sure phone and pump match. This will be a great help once school starts back because he can go through the lunch line and enter carbs on his phone. Concerning the comment about many schools not allowing kids to have phones…since my son has a Dexcom and I follow, I had it written in the school 504 plan that he’s allowed to have his phone at all times, including State testing. We are very happy with the new technology!

@rpalmer061 Here are my thoughts: I use the Dexcom/Clarity app a lot. I love the Share feature (share my data with my hubby) and I absolutely love the reports and data analysis on the Clarity app which works with the Dexcom app info. HOWEVER the thought of being able to bolus using my phone is enough to make me sacrifice my favorite apps – for awhile at least… Whether I stay with the Tandem app will depend on how much I love the bolusing from my phone compared to how much I love the instant information I get from the Clarity app.

You don’t have to choose!

I use the t:connect app to see my SG graph combined with basal and bolus insulin in one place.

I use the Dexcom G6 app to keep my SG value and graph in my phone’s notification bar.

I use the Dexcom Clarity app to get a broader view of my control.

I have all three installed and running simultaneously. They don’t interfere with each other at all.

Linda @Juggernautical, as Paul-Gabriel said, you don’t need to make a choice.
I’ve used the t-Connect app for years right alongside the Clarity app and both those apps automatically continuously upload all device data to the respective web-clouds. I generated reports and graphs from both sites to assist in my decisions and in addition I use the Tidepool reports, a JDRF sponsored tool, for certain details missing from both Dexcom and Tandem data reports.

You just gave me the best news, but I don’t know HOW to do this. Can you help me? How can I connect with both Dexcom AND T-Connect? When I go into Bluetooth settings on my pump, it says Mobile Connection (which I have On) and Unpair/Pair Device. How can I pair with more than one device: 1) t:connect app and 2) Dexcom app? –

Ok - so I just got off the phone with TSlim people. I am unsure how I missed this, but I am now connected to all of my favorite apps AND the t:connect for bolusing. Although I found out that they are only rolling this out to iPhones and Samsung Android phones.

I have a Pixel and am not planning to get a Samsung phone or iPhone for this. SIGH. – I was told to go ahead and do the pump update (need to request via the portal - see below) because there are some cool new features.

HOW TO REQUEST A TSLIM PUMP UPDATE

  1. Login to the customer portal (Tandem Diabetes t:connect portal) with your t:connect® web application username and password (this is also the same as your t:connect mobile app username and password).

  2. Select My Devices from the menu bar at the top of your screen.

  3. Verify the pump serial number displayed on your screen, then select Update My Software

  4. Select Begin Update Process to submit your request for the updated software that you would like to install on your t:slim X2 insulin pump. Some software updates require a prescription from your healthcare provider. If required, you will not be able to update your pump software until Tandem Diabetes Care has received a signed prescription. This process can take anywhere from 2 to 14 days, depending on response time from your healthcare provider. Once your prescription has been reviewed, you will receive notice of your training via email.

  5. Complete required training, if any, for the software update.

  6. Following completion of your training, we will send you another email with your software unique Update ID Number and instructions on how to install the updated software on your pump. You should receive an email within 10 minutes of completing the online training with a unique Update ID number for your pump.
