Production off DexCom G6 will cease July 1, 2026; you will be able to continue using them if you can find any.
Tandem has notified all users that attempts are underway to make the 15-day G7 compatible with its infusion devices; continue to read your Tandem Cares newsletter for update information - and also view your update information on you Source page.
“Dunno. Should have been here by now.” Up until now I thought Tandem was the pump company with the least bad software team. Back when Dexcom got the 15 day approved they said they’d hold release until all the pump companies were ready to avoid the complications of the G7 launch. Might have been true, might have been covering for Dexcom’s other problems. Other factors are the X2 may require FDA approval to use the 15 day. Pump companies, and the FDA, have learned to submit their devices differently these days to avoid requiring new approvals for changes like this but the tslimX2 is from before multiple CGM options existed. I just scrolled through Tandems’s last investor call from November, they didn’t talk about being late with the 15 day but did mention waiting on FDA approval for the mobi Android app and a handful of other things.
I get wanting to use the 15 day version, especially if the regular G7 is regularly lasting 10 days for you. I had the original Libre 14 day before switching to the G6, two weeks was nice. How long have you been using a tslim?
2nd rule of technology is only make one change at a time. I’m a rebel without a clue changing to a pump and the G7 15 day. With the G6 end of production coming up I took pity on my endo and just had him write one prescription for the G7 now instead of refilling the G6 one more time. I’ve still got at least six G6 sensors to use first while starting on the pump. Plus that means I’ll be starting the G7 with 4 spares, seems like a healthy amount.
When I placed my sensor order I was given the option of the 15 day ones but decided to stick with the 10s - from the comparison on Dexcom’s website the only advantage is the extended wear time, which isn’t a big deal for me. Warmup is 60 minutes for the 15-day, vs 30 for the 10. and while the G6 can be worn on the bicep there’s a - next to the G7, which is interesting although maybe not a big deal. Personally I like knowing that if got 3 sensors a month and something went wrong with the first I would still have two left while waiting for a replacement (actually I get quarterly orders now but it’s a psychological thing). Unless they eventually phase them out I plan to stick with the 10s.
For people who are still trying to figure out if they want to try the G7 15 day an advantage to the 15 day is it’s easier to build a supply of spares from the replacement sensors. Counterintuitive but true. I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind. Everyone is different just like everyone else and there’s a lot more to take into account than just a percentage in the back of the manual.
The Dexcom data for the 15 day shows the most failures happen on the last two days and the survival rate is lower for the 15 day than the 10. So I get to wear a sensor for 14-15 days and then get a brand new 15 day sensor more often than I’d be replacing a 10 day. I get the temptation to think of it as getting 9 instead of 6 but prescription diabetes supply best practice is refill as soon as possible so after a couple of replacements you aren’t starting from 0.
Both can be true at the same time From the G7 15 day manual:
I dug into that table after posting last night and I’m calling Shenanagans on Dexcom. The data wasn’t published in the peer reviewed results of the G7 15 day clinical trial, that trial wasn’t designed to evaluate sensor life and the manual mentions a second trial on sensor life that was never published. But looking at the big picture it doesn’t matter, we know that for some people the G6 worked fine long past its 10 day wear time. The G7, when it works, can last 10 days so 5 more days is possible. Having the option to try it is great.
