Dexcom G6 to be discontinued in the near future (date unknown)

I got an email from my DME supplier today stating (in part):

:syringe::syringe::syringe::syringe:
Dexcom has recently communicated plans to discontinue the G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system in the near future, although an exact date has not been announced. For patients who are not using an integrated insulin delivery system, Dexcom recommends they consider switching to the Dexcom G7 system as soon as possible.

If you are a patient using the Dexcom G6 CGM with an integrated insulin delivery system, you may still be able to change to the G7 CGM. Please check compatibility by visiting Dexcom’s website or by speaking with your healthcare provider.

I haven’t upgraded yet since I’ve been happy with the G6, and I haven’t been paying attention to plans to retire it so this came as news to me and I thought I would pass it on. My supplier is handling the changeover - all I had to do was click a link embedded in the message. I hope it’s that simple for everyone who needs to do it.

Yes, Dexcom has always tried to have one CGM on the market. When the G7 was announced I went back through forum posts and found the first "I got my G6 post then found the last “I got my G5” post. Can’t remember the exact time span but it was 2-3 years. Dexcom gave plenty of warning the G5 was going away.

Please try to never click links in emails. There’s no easy way to know if they are safe.

Some fun background info on the G6-G7 transitions Dexcom has said during earnings calls. They offered a rebate to DME companies for G7s. DME companies got so many people to order G7s it affected earnings. Previously Dexcom had said the G7 cost them a little more per unit than the G6 when it was released but it will cost less when people order more.

Dexcom is motivated for people to change so they can make more profit. Nothing wrong with that. Healthcare in America is broken so there are lots of roadblocks in addition to people generally not wanting to change so Dexcom needs to make an effort to encourage people to make the change. I’ve seen reports of DME companies, unlike Dorrie’s, lie to customer’s saying the G6 has already been discontinued in order to chase that rebate money. That’s a good reason to always verify anything a DME company says. Without clicking links in emails. :grinning: I haven’t changed to the G7 yet and am waiting a few months to even consider it while the new versions with the better bluetooth fill the supply chain.

Dorie @wadawabbit, what you received today is essentially what Dexcom has posted since the release of the G7.
Dexcom has indicated that G6 will remain available until AIDs/iAIDs devices that pair only with the G6 are updated or withdrawn.

Thanks @Dennis . Omnipod became compatible later in the game and I hasn’t been keeping up with the progress so it was need to me.
