Tandem Mobi especially compared to Omnipod

Hi all. Wondering about your experience with Tandem Mobi? My daughter has put off getting a pump for a long time. She’s 19 and going to college. She’s thinking seriously of the Mobi over the Omnipod b/c she wants the more aggressive algorythm since she’s always struggled with giving insulin 15 to 20 min before eating and usually does it when she’s eating. Is the Mobi overall easy to deal with? I’m wondering if she’ll be able to keep up with changing it every 2 or 3 days. What’s your experience? Thanks.

@tares Welcome Tamar, to the Breakthrough T1D Community Forum! I do not personally use the Tandem Mobi (or OmniPod), but I have used the Tandem t-Slim x2 for 7 years and like it very much; Mobi and t-Slim have some common features.

The Control IQ [CIQ] algorithm is available on both devices and depending on what setting information one puts in Profiles the pump can be wonderfully aggressive; I’ve been using the CIQ+. With both CIQ and CIQ+ I’ve managed hold my Time-In-Range [YIR] above 90% for the past few years while eating an “open” diet regimen where my daily carbohydrate consumption is about 230 grams. The really great point is that it has been more than 15 years since I’ve experienced anything beyond a “Light hypoglycemic” event; and my periodic reports seldom indicate as much as 2% below 70 mg/dl.

CIQ on both devices works with CGM models: Dexcom G6 & G7, as well as Abbot Libre Freestyle Two Pluss sensors.

Giving a Bolus dose before meals is simple with a pump as it is always with you - no searching around for a syringe or pen. Personally, I wait until I see what food is on my plate, make a guess as to the carb-count and then take insulin.

When changing an insulin cartridge and infusion set the user can select a reminder, choose between 2 days or 3 days. Also, the user can set one other reminder - I have my reminder set for when I have about one day’s amount of insulin left - this gives me time to prepare a cartridge beforehand and allows me to be more relaxed and unrushed when placing a new infusion set.

I’ve been pumping for many years and I am now using tandem mobi with Dexcom g7. If she’s not using a CGM then neither pump has a clear advantage. The mobi is not overly aggressive with automatic insulin unless it is in sleep mode and even then it takes “minding” Overall I like the size, love the phone interface, hate the alarms in ciq, but overall I like it much better than my older Medtronic pump. In my case, dexcom g7 works great on me, which leads to fantastic overnight blood sugar control.
If she’s forgetting to bolus, then neither the pod nor the mobi will change much, and neither will be able to automatically compensate for a forgotten or very late meal bolus Cheers and good luck! :peace_symbol::shamrock: both pumps are top line and many people here have success with pod or Tandem

Thanks for sharing your experience and good to hear it’s positive. She’s been wearing a CGM since she was little and now has the G7 as well. She doesn’t forget to bolus, she just does it when she starts eating or just before hand versus 15-20 min beforehand. Not an uncommon experience especially for late teen/young adult with a lot going on. But, maybe having the pump versus injections will help her bolos earlier. Really good to hear about your experience on sleep mode. I’ve heard from a couple of others about all the annoying alarms. Are you able to turn some of them off? and do you find changing the infusion set every 3 days is pretty easy?

@tares Well I’ve been using a pump and changing infusion sets for a very long time so yes for me it’s easy. When I first started pumping it took getting used to but a set every 3 to 4 days is soooo much better than multiple daily shots so the transition was an improvement rather than something to dread. Infusion sets can occlude (clog) so if my blood sugar is high there is a new variable “it could be a bad set”. CIQ alarms in mobi cannot be turned off. Low, low soon, high, high soon, low insulin in reservoir, bad pump time (every daylight savings at 2AM) irritate me. I set mobi to vibrate for me it’s the least intrusive. You need to use the inductive charger every day (the pump will actually last 2 and 1/2 days but that’s it) it charges fast I charge mine when I shower. I have backup syringes, a bottle of Lantus, a backup phone, and a backup charger in my go kit and when I travel.

@tares also the reservoir is 180 units. (Advertised as 200 units) so if she needs more that 60u/day the mobi will be a pain for her.
